Puppet's Jazz Bar, Park Slope, 481 5th Ave, Brooklyn NY 11215 (5th Ave & 11th St).
Mike Gold and I go back to the 1980s. We were neighbors in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn and were introduced to each other by a mutual friend and musician. Were both students of Sal Mosca. We were working musicians in New York City. Mike played with some important musicians in the history of jazz, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Tal Farlow, Sheila Jordon, Jon Hendricks, to name a few.
I was playing jazz gigs in small clubs like The Cornelia St. Cafe, Cleopatra's Needle, as well as what were called club dates. Club dates did not happen in clubs. They were played in catering halls and restaurants and consisted of weddings, engagement parties, corporate parties, etc.... These events that are now served by DJs. With the end of these well paying gigs, musicians had to find other ways to earn a living. Mike move to Minnesota and joined his brother's business. I always gave lessons and started a music school, Slope Music, in 1981. Shortly after moving to Minnesota, Mike started Jazz Impact.
Robert Weiss and I have been playing sessions and gigs around town for 5 years. His history as a musician is incredible. Check his website for a good read. He's played many venues including cruiseships. His big ears, sense of swing, great time, and use of dynamics make him a great drummer to play with.
Robert and Mike will meet for the first time on the gig.
